Parent Guide to Learning Journey

Overview

Learning Journey gives parents a private record of their child's shared session moments, individual observations, development notes, photos and attendance. It is designed to show more than a list of dates attended.

The Forest School or outdoor provider decides when an entry is ready to publish. Parents only see published information associated with their own children.

For a general product overview, see Forest School Learning Journey software.

Where Parents Find It

Open Learning Journey from the family portal menu. Select a child, then choose the date range you want to review.

Moments

Moments is the main journey feed. Depending on what the provider has published, an entry can contain:

  • the session name and date;
  • the shared reflection for the session;
  • an individual observation about the selected child;
  • a headline describing the moment;
  • photos tagged to the selected child.

A session may appear with limited detail when the child attended but the provider did not publish a reflection or individual observation for that day.

Development

Development brings the child's individual observations together across the selected period. Where the practitioner has added them, parents can see observation headlines, the detail recorded and suggested next steps.

The latest observation and current direction help make recent development easier to find. These records reflect the provider's observations; they are not automatically generated grades or formal assessments.

Gallery

Gallery collects the photos shared for the selected child and date range. Photos can be opened in a larger viewer.

Parents cannot see photos that are associated only with another child. Photo visibility depends on the provider's tagging, publication and consent controls.

Attendance

Attendance is a separate view showing attended sessions, hours outdoors and active months for the selected period. Keeping it separate allows parents to check participation without attendance dominating the learning story.

PDF Export

Parents can export a PDF for the selected child and date range. Published journey content can be included, and there is an option to add attendance to the PDF.

The exported document reflects the information available at the time it is created. It is not a statutory school report unless the provider has separately defined and reviewed it for that purpose.

Privacy

  • Parents see records linked to their own children only.
  • Draft entries are not visible in the family portal.
  • Photos are shown only where the selected child was tagged and the provider's consent checks allow sharing.
  • Questions about an observation or photo should be directed to the Forest School or outdoor provider that published it.

Providers can read Using Learning Journey and Session Photos and Photo Consent for the operational workflow. See Learning Journeys and Child Observations FAQ for common questions about parent access and exports.
