Learning Journeys and Child Observations FAQ

Does Oakline support Learning Journeys?

Yes. Oakline connects a shared session reflection with optional child-specific observations, next steps, consent-aware photos, attendance context and private family sharing. The journey begins with the session occurrence already created through booking and the register.

Can practitioners record observations for individual children?

Yes. After attendance is recorded, a practitioner can open a child marked Present and add:

• a headline describing the moment, development area or learning focus;
• the observation or reflection text;
• an optional next step describing the child's current direction.

Oakline also shows recent published observations while the practitioner writes. This supports continuity without generating grades or formal assessments. Oakline does not currently have a separate formal-goal field.

Can parents see their child's Learning Journey?

Yes. Parents select their child and date range in the private family portal. They can review published information through separate Moments, Development, Gallery and Attendance views. Drafts and records associated only with another child are not shown.

Can Learning Journeys include photos?

Yes. Practitioners can upload session photos and tag children who were present. A family can see a photo only when its child is tagged, the child's recorded photo permission allows sharing and the provider publishes and shares it in line with its safeguarding practice.

Can Oakline export Learning Journeys as PDF?

Yes. Parents can export the published Learning Journey for a selected child and date range as a PDF. The export can include journey notes and photos, with attendance added when selected. It is not automatically a statutory school report.

How are Learning Journeys connected to attendance and registers?

Oakline keeps the operational context connected:

1. A parent completes a booking.
2. The confirmed place appears on the correct session register.
3. The practitioner records attendance.
4. The practitioner adds the shared session reflection.
5. A child marked present can receive an individual observation and next step.
6. Consent-aware, tagged photos can support the record.
7. Published moments appear privately for the family and can be exported as PDF.

This avoids recreating the child list or detaching an observation from the session where it happened.

Can practitioners write Learning Journey observations offline?

Not currently. Prepared registers and supported attendance actions have an offline-ready workflow, but Learning Journey writing and photo upload require an internet connection.
